Our work

We work on projects at the local level in Euskal Herria, as well as national and European levels. For example, the projects in Zalla and Orduña, the chestnut projects in Apellaniz and Navarra, or in Vitoria-Gasteiz, where we are collaborating with the Environmental Studies Center (CEA) of the city council for the development of the Basque Country’s Cultivated Biodiversity Center. In addition to this, the training programs and projects we have in schools are of great importance to our association, as we have reached more than a thousand students.

Support these projects and help preserve the traditional varieties of the Basque Country.

Research

Through interviews with the women farmers (baserritarras), we recover traditional knowledge and practices related to the use and management of cultivated varieties, such as seeds and fruit trees grown in their fields.

We have conducted research in over 35 municipalities in Euskal Herria, managing to recover more than 2,000 entries.

Conservation

Ex-situ conservation in cold storage at the germplasm bank and seed storage of the Olarizu Botanical Garden.

In-situ conservation in tree plantations by our guardians and farmers who have been maintaining the seeds for generations.

Outreach

We conduct training workshops, educational activities in schools, talks, tastings, participate in fairs, guided tours, inclusive eco-walks… all with the aim of educating about our work.

We provide advisory services on experimental plantations, fruit trees, training for educational centers and teachers, as well as for public and private institutions.

Organic production

We traditionally select the varieties and their characteristics as the farmers (baserritarras) have done for generations, in order to give them the recognition they deserve.
